KAKABEKA FALLS - THE NIAGRA OF THE NORTH
Kakabeka Falls is the highest waterfall in Northern Ontario. It is located on the Kaministiquia River, beside the village of Kakabeka Falls in the municipality of Oliver Paipoonge.
Fun Fact: The name “kakabeka” comes from the Ojibwe word “gakaabikaa” which means “waterfall over a cliff.”
We began our journey from the parking lot of Done-Rite Tire & Auto on Carrick Street. We headed out to the Harbour Expressway, hung a left and drove straight for roughly 32 kilometers. We then saw the green sign indicating we had reached the village of Kakabeka Falls. We drove about a kilometer further and on the left was the sign for Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park.
Another Fun Fact: We could actually hear the sound of the Falls from the Highway.
We drove into the Park and stopped at the Visitors Booth. The cost to park and visit the Falls for two hours was $5.25. What else can a family do for $5.25?
The first thing we noticed as we stepped out of our vehicle was the smell of moss and cedar in the air. It was a nice change from the stale air inside our home.
The walkways were beautiful. Very clean and wide enough that we did not need to worry about crossing paths with visitors.
We spent roughly 45 minutes walking to the various observation areas. Every angle was spectacular, and some of them even provided us with a bonus of mist from the Falls below.
There are a variety of picnic tables located near the observation areas, and a Visitors Building for those who are looking for souvenirs.
Before we made our way back to Thunder Bay, we stopped at “The Ice Cream Cottage” for……ice cream! The service was fast and friendly, and the ice cream was delicious. We finished our day trip by ordering take out from “The Eddy.” We chose the famous “Eddy Burger” which was crazy big and crazy good. Apparently, Sheryl Crow felt the same way when she stopped there in 2018.
We give this day trip a 10 out of 10!
