PENNOCK CREEK TRAIL (A.K.A - 25TH SIDE ROAD TREE FARM)
Pennock Creek Trail is located on 25th Side Road in the City of Thunder Bay. It is truly one of Thunder Bay’s hidden gems.
We began our journey from the parking lot of Done-Rite Tire & Auto on Carrick Street. We headed out to the Harbour Expressway, hung a left and drove straight until we hit Highway 61. We turned left on Highway 61 and continued driving straight until we reached Arthur Street. At Arthur Street, we turned right and drove for roughly 8 kilometres. Once we passed the train overpass, we turned right on 25th Side Road. We drove for roughly 1 kilometer on 25th Side Road and then turned right into the parking lot of Pennock Creek Trail.
Important Note: There is not a large sign marking Pennock Creek Trail, so drive slowly to ensure you don’t miss it!
The parking lot is not terribly large. There is room for maybe 10 vehicles. Once you step out of your vehicle, you are essentially in the thick of it. There are flat trails for people who want to take a leisurely walk, and a more difficult trail for those who want to take on a few hills. The more difficult trail is marked with green and white signs and takes you around Pennock Creek.
Another Important Note: We did encounter a few off-leash dogs on our walk. We didn’t mind, however if you have a fear of dogs you should be aware that many people use these trails as an unofficial dog park.
We spent about an hour walking the trails, so we felt we were deserving of a treat. We decided to place a take-out order at one of our favourite local restaurants, the Growing Season. We placed our order online from the parking lot of the Tree Farm which was convenient. We are creatures of habit, so we ordered our favourites, a venus rice bowl with chicken, and a chipotle unwrap with chicken. We also got a cookie (they call it a cookie, but it’s the size of a loaf of bread).
The order was ready and waiting for us when we walked into the Algoma Street restaurant 20 minutes later.
It was a perfect day in Thunder Bay! We give it a 10 out of 10.
